Torpedo house at Babie Doły is one of the most recognisable motifs on the Polish coast. The concrete WWII torpedo station stands in the Bay of Gdańsk like a monument to history – raw, exposed, and shaped by light and season.
Straight on from the water
Wading in roughly waist-deep, you can photograph the torpedo station in a fairly minimalist way. The warm light of a rising sun is only available in winter or early spring. This frame was made in March.
Dead calm
Mornings this still are rare. Heavy cloud with the sun breaking through made for a fairly colourful frame, with cloud reflections in the water. Even with a 90 s exposure, the shot stayed sharp.
In motion
A 30 s exposure adds movement to the clouds. A polarising filter pulled a little detail from beneath the fairly shallow water here.
Along the beach at Babie Doły there are several spots from which you can freely lead lines through the frame towards the torpedo station.
Remains of the pier
At low water you can get closer to the remains of the pier that once linked the torpedo station to the shore.
Pier remnants
Remains of the pier leading to the building, photographed from the side. A polarising filter let me look slightly under the surface and photograph part of the seabed as well.

The torpedo station still dominates the coastal view for several kilometres.
