Composition – 5 Rules That Will Change Your Photos

composition technique basics

Good composition is the difference between a snapshot and a photograph. Here are 5 rules worth knowing.

1. Rule of Thirds

Divide the frame into 9 equal parts with two horizontal and two vertical lines. Place important elements at their intersections – not in the centre.

2. Leading Lines

Roads, rivers, fences, stairs – they guide the viewer’s eye through the photograph. Look for them consciously.

3. Space in Front of the Subject

Photographing someone walking to the right? Leave space on the right. The photo will breathe.

4. Framing

Use surrounding elements (arch of trees, window, gate) to “frame” the main subject.

Branches create a natural frame around a distant castle

5. Simplification

The best photographs have one clear point of interest. Eliminate everything that distracts.

Rules exist to be known – and sometimes deliberately broken.
